Description |
Configuration Management is at the core of effective service management. The quality of data within the CMDB (Configuration Management Database - formerly Asset Register) affects the efficiency of the entire corporate service management strategy, as all processes utilize and feed into configuration management.
As defined by ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library), Configuration Management is more than a simple registry of physical assets; it includes documentation, service level agreements, service catalogs, warranties and knowledge. It enables the enterprise to manage the evolving relationships of those assets with customers, internal departments and locations, other organizations and external suppliers.
Configuration Management enables IT to assess the current state of the IT infrastructure at any time. By providing comprehensive and up-to-date configuration details, infraEnterprise Configuration Management provides a huge strategic advantage by empowering a business to:
anticipate impacts on IT services that result from a change
identify problem trends for a Configuration Item (asset)
quantify an asset failures impact on a business
manage lease and maintenance costs
manage software license and upgrade costs. Integration with service management processes
The centralized and relational CMDB within infraEnterprise provides seamless integration with Service Level Management, Incident / Problem, and Change Management processes.
Incident and Problem Management: Network topologies of linked configuration items can be graphically displayed, and individual link types between configuration items (or assets) can be created and defined. This information, as well as a fully audited history and detailed baseline configuration data are all available to the service desk, providing the ability to quickly isolate problem hardware.
Change Management: The infraEnterprise CMDB graphically represents network asset relationships, allowing IT to assess the impact of planned/emergency changes on the infrastructure to minimize service disruption.
Service Level Management: Service Level Agreements can be defined against configuration items. The configuration data allows the business impact of downtime of the CI to be established and therefore drive any customer service agreements against that particular piece of infrastructure.
Furthermore, comprehensive trend analysis capabilities on configuration data allows a business to identify weak spots in their IT infrastructure and take pre-emptive action. |
